St. Philip’s College hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 6, 2022, for the launch of a Little Free Library. Little Free Library’s program places neighborhood book-sharing boxes in areas where books are scarce. The program strives to advance literacy development among children.

The event took place outside the Child Development Center (CDC), where the Little Free Library is located. CDC children will be encouraged to read a book a week with the opportunity to receive a gift/prize at the end of completing the book. The CDC received a donation of 100 books from the San Antonio Public Library to launch the program.

The first Little Free Library box was built in 2009 in Wisconsin. There are now more than 125,000 registered, volunteer-led Little Free Libraries around the world.

SPC’s Little Free Library was funded by the academic 2021-2022 St. Philip’s College Faculty/Staff Innovation Fund. The CDC collaborated with the Center for Learning Resources to join the worldwide initiative.
