Credit Human offers free financial health seminars to SAC students.
Monthly seminars offer training in budgeting, saving, and other topics.

SAC’s Student Advocacy Center has teamed up with Credit Human to provide free financial health seminars to students on campus.

Credit Human, a credit union serving the San Antonio area, hosts a series of seminars teaching the basics of financial health to students. Topics range from an introduction to financial health (offered quarterly), to budgeting (offered monthly), and other subjects, including saving and understanding credit.

The workshops are open to all students who want to learn more about taking control of their financial health. It’s especially helpful for those receiving financial aid for the first time, said Pamela Farias, Senior Coordinator of Student Success in the Student Advocacy Center.

“This helps them manage their money and helps them know what to do when they get their aid,” she said. “Some students don’t even have bank accounts, which you need when you receive financial aid.”

In addition to lessons on personal finance, the program offers other benefits for students. Those who attend at least five of the seminars are entered into a drawing for a scholarship. Credit Human offers food and a chance to win gift cards at each free seminar. In addition, Credit Human will fund the initial deposits of SAC students and employees wishing to open an account at the credit union.

Seminars are currently being planned for the fall semester. Once the schedule is finalized, dates and registration information will be available on the Student Advocacy Center web page.

“We’re hoping that they’ll be on campus more just helping students with financial information and to set up bank accounts if needed,” Farias said.

The series of SAC campus workshops began in March and have met with great success, prompting the credit union to work with Alamo Colleges to bring the program to other campuses in the district.

Credit Human shares its financial health curriculum throughout the community, presenting seminars to employers, churches and other organizations.

The program is designed to help reduce financial stress and help individuals build financial slack, where they understand how to plan and save, meet their financial responsibilities and start planning for longer-term financial goals, such as buying a home.

“We saw that we could contribute to improving financial health in our community by building this curriculum to increase financial health awareness,” said Juan Antonio Ruiz, business development account executive with Credit Human. “We provide information that will help individuals make little steps in behavioral changes.”

Credit Human is a not-for-profit, member-owned financial cooperative headquartered in San Antonio with more than 235,000 members across the United States.
